Making a Toast or Speech

Are you planning to make a speech or toast to honor the graduate?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • It should be personalized for the graduate.
  • Mention their accomplishments in high school first - Good grades? Sports? Clubs?
  • Then talk about their future. College? Job? Travel?

Here are a some other nice things to add:

  • "If you put your mind to it, there's nothing you can't accomplish."
  • "Your schooling may be over, but remember to open your mind to new opportunities to learn.”
  • "Put your future in good hands - your own."

Sample Speech

Graduation is a major milestone in your life. We are very proud of all your accomplishments: [list a few here: for example; grades, academic accomplishments, extracurricular activities, athletic events, friendships formed, good deeds and philanthropic activities.]

As we have been preparing to host a party to honor your achievements and pay tribute to these successes, we were reminded of all the people who have been a part of your success: [name a few special family friends, teachers, coaches, friends]

It is such an exciting time for all of us. It seems like it was just yesterday that you were heading off to kindergarten.

We hope that you enjoyed your years in school and are excited about your future. Next year when you are [doing what? away at school, working, traveling, in the service] we hope you will do the best that you can do and remember some of the important values we have taught you, [list a few here, for example: honesty, respecting your room mates, take care of yourself, don't do drugs or drink, get enough sleep.]

We will always be here for you.

Celebrate!

We Love You

Use Song Lyrics

One of our favorite ideas is to include some relevant song lyrics in your speech or toast.

Use lyrics from a graduation-themed song or a favorite song of your graduate.

Here are some songs we think are great.  We would love to list the lyrics for you but we can't due to copyright laws.  Look for the CDs for these songs or go to Google and search on the song title:  (You can also play the CDs/songs at your Graduation Party!)

  • "My Wish" ~ Rascal Flatts
  • "Graduation (Friends Forever)" ~ Vitamin C
  • "You Raise Me Up" ~ Josh Groban
  • "Whenever You Remember" ~ Carrie Underwood

  • "What a Wonderful World" ~ Louis Armstrong
